How to donate to charity without spending more than a dime - By Haneefah
The Prophet S.A.W always encouraged us to give back to the less fortunate.
Sometimes it may seem we are a little bit in the red and we would want to donate to the poor! Sand you just might have enough for you, even giving a little can seem a stretch and you are willing to give back out of it or find another way to do your part towards a charity.
Here are a few ways to make your contributions without breaking the bank.
The prophet S.A.W said, “Smiling in the face of your brother is charity...”
It means even an act of smiling or kindness is charity. This won’t even cost you a thing, just the movement of your facial muscles. It was the Prophet’s habit to smile all the time, to whoever it may be. Apart from that act of charity onto someone else, it actually makes you feel good, smiling releases endorphins that counteract and diminish the stress hormones. Endorphins are feel-good hormones. Spread the smile, and you are already spending in charity!
Volunteering is a great way to help out in your community, whether it is at a local Masjid or at school which would involve other people like friends of family members or volunteer on your own at places such as animal shelters and nursing homes. They are a few places to start looking and they are sure to need the extra help. You can also check online and look for volunteer work around your locality that you can lend a helping hand.
“Allah is helping the servant as long as the servant is helping his brother”
3. Clean out your closet.
Giving things such as clothing, furniture and other household items that you no longer need is also a good way to contribute in charity. Find out about associations or individuals that accept these and donate there. You can ask from your local Masjid or homeless shelters around to see if they accept donations. Try and make sure they are still in good conditions; you do not just “need” them back.
4. Give of yourself.
Usually, some hospitals are always in need of donations of blood and it’s somewhat easy to find a blood drive or donation site in your locale. You can actually donate hair too! There are some outfits that provide for that. Donating blood may not be as easy as it seems you would undergo some tests to determine if you can donate and if you’re scared of needles, there are all those above options. I had to stop mid-way into a blood donation program before because i was convinced i was fainting. I was not. Ha!
Surf the web to see legitimate charities in which you can contribute. Giving back doesn’t necessarily mean laying out a lot of money or breaking the bank, sometimes, all it takes is a little bit of time and creativity to make a BIG difference.
